In Novi Sad (Serbia), the city where I live, there is the Monument to the Victims of the Raid raised in 1971 next to the beautiful Danub. I often walk or ride a bike next to this monument. I had moments when I watched it more closely and felt mixed emotions. The monument illustrates the family, they look as they are frozen in front of the fate that occurred to them in difficult historical moments. This is about the historical event during the WWII also know as ,,Raid in southern Bačka” or ,,Novi Sad massacre” that happend in January 1942. The monument was built to honour the memory of Serbian, Jewish and Roma victims. I chose this monument because it is located in Novi Sad and it is connected with similar events that took place on the global historical scene in that period.
Thanks, I find it very appealing as a piece of art! Also, I think your feelings illustrate well that “collective memory” exists. I wonder if you can recall any example of similarly appealing monument in Serbia, yet of the “positive” event?
Thank you for comment. I would like to answer to your question, but I am not sure I understood what you mean when you said ,,positive” event?
I mean a monument for the event that is a happy one.
Great memories indeed! I think this monument reminds you and other about the victim’s suffering and helps them no to repeat the same mistake again
Thank you for comment, Mohamed. I agree with you and believe that art like this help us to be more awareness and learn for future.
The monument is so beautiful and moving at the same time, there are so many stories of that time, heart breaking.
I like how you described your feelings when passing by this peace of art!
