I chose a photo of a statue of Simón Bolívar in Washington, DC, my hometown. I have seen this statue many, many times but never had the chance to learn about the man it honors or any independence movements in South America, for that matter. This picture is interesting to me because it represents a part of history about which I know little, but it is also meaningful to me because it comes from my home.
This is very interesting, I wonder why or how it got approved, and I think that your choice of track “statelessness” is meaningful. After all, I wonder how much does these statues that we see every day really mean to common folk. They are supposed to convey meaning and perhaps teach history, but most of the time for most of the people (me included) they are just a meaningless statue, or a fleeting question that will never be answered.
Interesting image! and also reflection. I agree with Matias that we rarely stop to think about the meaning of these monuments, why they are there and what they will want to tell us about. Simón Bolivar represented a very important independence movement in South America, and he, like many others in the world, may not be given the value or importance they deserve, beyond a monument. Thanks for sharing!
